1. Focus on the Bigger Foot
It's incredibly common for people to have one foot bigger than the other. Regardless of how much bigger one foot is compared to the other, you need to choose your shoe size based on the bigger foot. Typically, the bigger foot isn't just a little longer; it is also a little wider.
In most cases, the bigger foot is the non-dominant foot because it works harder to keep up with the dominating foot and therefore the muscles develop differently causing a slight variance. Other causes of one bigger foot include a foot injury, wearing a cast and surgical procedures.
2. Measure Your Feet
Once you're a fully grown adult, your shoe size probably won't change drastically, but it may grow a little, especially if you go through a pregnancy, injure your foot or simply get older. For this reason, you should occasionally re-measure your feet to ensure you are wearing the right size shoe. Even if your feet haven't changed, they may have originally been measured incorrectly.
When measuring your feet, make sure you wear the type of socks you'll wear with the shoes, especially if you wear particularly thick socks, which can significantly change the size of your foot. In addition, it's best to measure your feet at the end of the day. The daily wear and tear to feet can cause them to swell and expand by the end of the day, and you want your shoes to fit all day.
3. Choose the Right Size
Once you know the size of your shoe, you should know what size shoe you'll need. However, depending on the brand and type of shoe, sizes can fit drastically different. Much of this is due to the fact that shoes are measured in different ways, depending on where you live.
In America, shoe sizes are based on the archaic barleycorn unit of measurement, and men and women shoes have different sizes. So if you're a woman, and you wear a size seven shoe, your foot is 9 1/3 inch long foot (28 barleycorns). In the UK, on the other hand, shoes are measured in centimetres. You always need to try on shoes and walk around in them instead of trusting the size on the shoe if you want to ensure the perfect fit.
4. Consider the Shape of the Shoe
Your feet also have a natural shape, which may impact which type of shoes are more comfortable. If you have an Egyptian shaped foot, the big toe is the highest tip, and each following toe is shorter than the last, creating a perfect slope. These feet do better in oblique, round or square shoes. Pointy and almond-shaped shoes may cause pain and squish the toes together.
On the other hand, if you have a Greek shaped foot, the second toe is the highest point, and these feet do well in pointed and almond-shaped shoes. Finally, if you have Roman feet, the first three toes are about the same length. These types of feet do well in round and square shoes, but unlike Egyptian feet, an oblique shoe may be too tight at the tip.
